I hope many of you fellow donors will help them to build sanctuary aviaries and other facilities on the 10 acres in order to be able to provide a home to more parrots in need as well as help owners, who are no longer able to care for their birds, find a permanent quality home for their loved Parrots. In my opinion, the Bird Haven operates at the level of a zoo with strict hygiene and safety protocols. This is where new birds go into for a full health assessment and observation while blood work is performed by the vet lab. ![]() Recently, an intake/observation building was constructed which boasts individual bird rooms with separate air conditioning and filtration. They also have an onsite apartment for a bird keeper, storage facilities for cages and toys, and acreage to expand. The HVAC has a special filter to filter out the dander and keep the air as fresh as possible. The facility is great, the Bird Haven has a commercial kitchen with walk-in cooler, a med room, laundry facility and at the time of this review, two large bird rooms which can be completely hosed down and disinfected if need be. I find that this rescue places the bird's well being first and does great due diligence before adopting parrots out to new homes. As with most rescue organizations, limited funds force you to be both creative and give everything of yourself in order to provide the animals the best care possible. As a donor, adviser, volunteer and parrot rescuer myself, I can attest to the fact that this rescue/sanctuary is run with full passion. Donors should know that every single dollar goes to good use in providing the best care to the parrots and getting them ready for life in their future adoptive homes.Īfter about 18 years of being run from a residential home, Wings of Love Bird Haven was finally able to move onto acreage and begin building a professional facility. This is a phenomenal organization and I’m proud to be a volunteer here. Now that the Haven has moved to its new property, they have the ability to take in more unwanted birds and do community outreach events to educate people on proper parrot care. There are not nearly enough parrot rescues out there to meet the need and sadly, until people stop buying baby birds, that is likely to continue to be the case for many years. Their cages are kept clean and filled with toys and they get ample socialization from the daily volunteers. While at the Haven, birds receive a nutritious fresh diet and specialty care from board-certified avian veterinarians. (Some people might complain that the application is long and detailed, but a person who isn’t willing to fill out an adoption application probably won’t be willing to do all the work required to properly care for a parrot.) It’s also part of the adoption contract that, if for any reason, the adoption doesn’t work out the bird must come back to the Haven, thereby keeping birds safe and off sites like Craigslist. De prevents that cycle from continuing by thoroughly screening adopters and making sure that they are set up for success and matched with the right bird. Most people who get parrots have no idea what challenges they will face in sharing their home with a highly social, intelligent WILD animal and sadly, so many of them bounce around from home to home. Immediately, I was impressed by De and her knowledge and dedication to the birds. I recently moved to Texas and started volunteering at Wings of Love Bird Haven.
